Classic Carpets
Persian carpets are named after the name of the cities where they are woven. Every region produces carpets with various specific characteristics.
New Persian carpets have usually got a central medaillon and form triangles in the corners. Around the medaillon there are often flowers with grape vine leaves and branches whose colours are harmonically combined with the background colour of the carpet. Basic colours are blue, red, brown and green delicately combined with each other. In some cities they use repeating patterns of flowers for the carpet instead of a central medaillon.
In contrast to nomadic carpets, classic carpets manufactured in cities contain more than 300,000 knots per square metre. The representation of the designs and patterns are therefore very detailed. Some famous Persian classic carpets are: Isfahan, Nain, Qum, Tabriz, Sarouk, Kashan, Kerman and many others.
Isfahan Carpets

Isfahan is located in South West Iran. Isfahan carpets have always been very famous not only in Iran but throughout the world. The city with its beautiful palaces, mosques and important cultural monuments was once the capital of Persia. These buildings have significantly influenced the designs of these carpets.
They are famous for their high knot density, detailed designs and perfect quality of their materials. Designs that are often used are trees, animals, geometrical medaillons with corners as well as human figures and motifs inspired by nature. Typical colours for Isfahan carpets are turquoise, navy blue, red and beige. Two to five smaller borders seperate the carpet from its central background.
Nain Carpets

The city of Nain is located in the central region of Isfahan. The carpets of this region are woven with the asymmetrical Persian knot in organized workshops as well as in houses. As far as their designs are concerned, they are similar to the Isfahan designs - a large central medaillon - with the difference however, that more animals, mostly birds are to be seen. They are generally bright, with a beige or dark blue background. They are divided in the following qualities: La and 4La, 6La and 9La with the first one being the most exclusive.
Qum Carpets

The city of Qum is located in central Iran. The production of Qum carpets started around 1930 and has been since influenced by the motifs used in other Persian regions. They are made of silk which makes them particularly thin and tight.
Most of the Qum carpets have curve shapes and artful plant and flower motifs and delicate patterns. Traditional vases and hunting scenes are also very popular. They are usually bright and the typical colours that are used are light green, ivory, turquoise, gold, rosy and beige or darker and brighter colours such as red and blue. Some other colours that are used are rose-red, gold, yellow and orange.
Tabriz Carpets

The city of Tabriz is located in North West Iran. it is one of the most important weaving centres in Iran. Tabriz carpets contain a central medaillon with weeping willows and cypresses around it. Another famous design is the four seasons depicting rural life. The colours are bright or pastel depending on the demand of the market. A special characteristic of the Tabriz carpet is the variety of colours that are used. Although the background may be blue, green, yellow, orange or lavender the general impression is that of a pastel-coloured carpet.
Sarouk Carpets

Sarouk is a village located in the region of Markazi, central Iran. These carpets are generally of a very high quality. They are woven with first-rate quality wool and woolen warp. Their motifs may be with geometrical or curve forms. After their production they are usually washed with tea in order to look older and to gain the style of an antique carpet.
There are two types of Sarouk carpets: The traditional Sarouk and the American Sarouk. The traditional Sarouk carpets contain Herati, Boteh, or Gul Hannai motifs. Typical colours are red, blue, orange, ochre and ivory. The American Sarouk carpets are mainly red and blue.
Kerman Carpets

The city of Kerman is situated in South East Iran. Traditional designs of Kerman carpets are a central medaillon and a bordure with flowers. The Kerman flowers have a bright background full of flowers. The most common colours used in antique and semi-antique Kerman carpets are blue and a combination of red and blue.
Kashan Carpets

These carpets are woven in the city of Kashan in central Iran. They usually have a central medaillon surrounded by trees, various shapes and natural motives. Their main colours are blue, red and beige. They are woven with the Persian knot, with supreme wool and their pile is relatively thick.
